BOURBON SESSIONS AT THE RIPY MANSION WITH ALEX CASTLE, OLD DOMINICK DISTILLERY

THURSDAY, MARCH 14, 2024 AT 6:30PM

Bourbon Sessions at the Ripy Mansion is pleased to welcome back Alex Castle, Master Distiller and Senior Vice President of Old Dominick Distillery.

Making spirits isn’t as much a job as it is a calling, and Alex Castle found hers early on. As a Kentucky native, there’s a passion for good bourbon that runs deep. As a chemical engineer, there’s a love of the process that takes something simple and makes it sublime.

Alex’s talent passion, and creativity are why she was supervising Wild Turkey’s 24-hour-a-day operation at only 24 years old, and why we’re proud to have her continue the Old Dominick legacy.

For her many accomplishments and tireless pursuit of excellence, Alex Castle was appointed as the state of Tennessee’s first female Head Distiller. She now holds the title Master Distiller and Senior Vice President. In 2020, Alex was elected the first female President of the Tennessee Distillers Guild, a position she still holds today.

Alex also represents craft distillers across the country as Vice Chair of the Craft Advisory Council for the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States.

Come join us as Alex shares all the new and exciting things she and the Old Dominick team have been up to since her last visit!

As always, tasting will be accompanied by light appetizers. Tours of the historic T.B. Ripy Mansion and cash bar will also be available. Net proceeds go directly towards the continued maintenance and restoration efforts of the Ripy Mansion.

Bourbon Sessions at the Ripy Mansion - Whiskey Law with Brian Haara

Join us as we welcome Brian Haara, author of Bourbon Justice: How Whiskey Law Shaped America, as he discusses the Bottled in Bond Act of 1897.

Brian has practiced law in Kentucky for 25 years, where since 2011 Super Lawyers and Best Lawyers recognize him as one of the top business litigators in the Commonwealth. But best of all, he found a way to combine his passions for law, bourbon, and history with dusty bourbon stories that play out better than fiction. Brian found that old bourbon lawsuits tell the real story of bourbon history, and those stories are better than marketing tales.

Brian is author of Bourbon Justice: How Whiskey Law Shaped America, which tells the history of bourbon through American litigation and how America’s business developed around — and because of — whiskey. He’s also the author of the popular bourbon blog, Sipp’n Corn, he’s on the monthly podcast, Bourbon Community Roundtable with Bourbon Pursuit, and Brian gained national recognition for winning judgement in Sazerac v. Peristyle, which established a groundbreaking expansion to the fair use defense to trademark claims.

Brian has shared his dusty bourbon stories in events at the Frazier History Museum, Bourbon & Beyond, as a University guest lecturer, and at bourbon seminars and guided tastings across the country.

In this Bourbon Sessions at the Ripy Mansion, Brian will discuss how The Bottled in Bond Act of 1897 plays a prominent role in bourbon and legal history. Brian will guide us through a tasting including Old Forestor 1897 Bottled in Bond, Henry McKenna 10-year Single Barrel Bottled in Bond, and Old Grand-Dad Bottled in Bond.

Tasting will be accompanied by light appetizers. Cash bar and tours of the Historic T.B. Ripy Mansion will also be available. Net proceeds go directly towards the maintenance and continued restoration efforts of the T.B. Ripy Mansion.

The Bourbon Road Podcast at the Ripy Mansion

The Bourbon Road podcast is two Veterans sharing pours and good stories with interesting guests. Each week we sip on bourbon while talking with celebrities, musicians, chefs, authors, industry experts and everyone in between. If bourbon makes it better… or even the other way around, then we want to talk about it. Jim Shannon and Mike Hiatt are both military veterans with a love for bourbon. They live in Shelby County Kentucky in the heart of “Bourbon Country”. The show is often recorded on the road as the boys travel, meeting new friends and tasting new whiskey. They always keep the conversation “clean” and “smartly focused” on the guests. Even so, they love to have fun as jokes and laughter are commonplace on every episode. So, kick back with a pour of your favorite bourbon, and join us on our journey down The Bourbon Road.

Jim is a Software Developer as well as Founder of a Louisville based biotech company which supplies research chemicals for pharmaceutical drug discovery. He is also a proud US Navy Veteran. He and his wife Melody live on a small horse farm in Simpsonville, not far off the Bourbon Trail. They enjoy the outdoors and spending time with family and friends. Jim is an avid bourbon lover and according to his wife, has “way too many” open bottles.

Mike (Big Chief) is a Retired US Coast Guard Chief and currently works for the US Coast Guard as a search and rescue specialist in Louisville, KY. He, his wife Vivian and their dog Woodrow live on a small farm on the rolling waters of Jeptha Creek in the heart of the Bourbon Trail. He enjoys the outdoors and living life to the fullest. Mike can often be found by a fire with Vivian and Woodrow listening to music and drinking a great beverage.

Join us at the next Bourbon Sessions at the Ripy Mansion when hosts Mike Hiatt and Jim Shannon of The Bourbon Road discuss the Bourbon Boom. Sip along as they discuss how social media and new media formats such as podcasts have had a major impact on this growth.

Presentation and whiskey tasting featuring selections from Wild Turkey, W.L. Weller and Wilderness Trail paired with light appetizers. As always, the cocktail bar will be open and tours of the mansion will be available. All proceeds in excess of event costs will go directly toward the continued restoration efforts of the Ripy Mansion.

Bourbon Sessions with Maggie Kimberl, President - Bourbon Women Association

Please welcome Maggie Kimberl, American Whiskey Magazine Content Editor and Bourbon Women Association President.

Maggie is a freelance spirits journalist focusing on whiskey culture in the United States, though she considers herself to be “geographically blessed” to live in the epicenter of the bourbon world, Louisville, Kentucky. When she’s not covering the bourbon beat, you can find her browsing through vintage vinyl with her kids or tending to her homegrown tomatoes.

Please join us as she takes us on a journey of The Agricultural Evolution of Bourbon.

Bourbon just didn’t happen. What started as a way to preserve crops was gradually improved upon until it became what we know and love today.

But how did it get there?

Learn about common whiskey on the frontier all the way to modern-day commercial Bourbon with a guided tasting and presentation.

As always, the tasting will be paired with appetizers. A cash bar is available as well as a tour of the Ripy Mansion. All proceeds cover the cost of the event itself and any remaining funds go directly towards the continued restoration efforts of the Ripy Mansion.
